When I consider the above quote, I realize that I deeply care about how ways of talking and belonging shape each other. I have been impacted by another author's book Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life and its unique practices of self-talk and interpersonal dialogue as intentional spaces for care and emancipation. At the beginning of an earlier book by that author, we find the opinionated roots that informed NVC practices: education is a site of social justice because the ways we educate have for too long perpetuated cycles of personal disempowerment, which itself is enabled by how we communicate oppressive cultural values that have long been impressed on us.

I experience education as inherently cultural because it actively reflects and reshapes the cultures I inhabit. I believe that any act of communication is one of cross-cultural learning because we carry lessons from unique lived experience of our cultures. With this experience of cultural impact and informed by neuroqueer awareness, I seek to practice culturally-centered and peaceful forms of social learning through neurovariable communication.

Neurovariable communication involves connecting in accountable, inclusive, and expansive ways while listening for and responding to feelings and needs. In my work, I offer ways of creating new understanding at the interface where I and my culture meet others. This can include extended periods of dedicated nonverbal interaction, in-depth dialogue around similarities, differences, and impacts of identity intersections, or structured activities using compassionate tools.
